Trying out the cloth

diapers that is. When I was pregnant, Jer and I were adamant about getting and using cloth diapers. But, when we discovered that most/all daycares will not allow cloth diapers at their schools, I kind of forgot about the idea. Plus, there was soooo much other stuff that we needed for baby. I received 2 BumGenius 4.0 diapers as a shower gift (thanks Katie B. now D.!) that had been sitting in Isla June's closet for the last 7 months. Until this week!

I guess I was kind of thinking, well, I only have two of them, what's the point. And, I have to admit, as much as I wanted to cloth diaper, I didn't really know how to go about it and I was a little nervous. But, after talking with a friend who is cloth diapering (thanks Leah!) and rereading some tips from John and Sherry (first name basis here), I decided to give it a go. I washed everything and stuffed the folds in, did a little try it on with the baby to make sure the fit was right, and off we went! I was so excited, I mean, they were soo cute on her! And I've always loved the idea! I was so excited to show them to Jeje and teach her about them. But then, it was time for nap, and I needed to change her diaper....and she had peed. And I didn't know what to do. I mean, I didn't think I could put them in the hamper....maybe the sink? Definitely not the trash. Ummmmmm.....not sure. I decided to hang them over the hamper, dirty side out. Hey, it's the best I could do in that second.
So, I put the second cloth diaper on her (this was going to be a quick experiment....), and sent her to dreamland. I have to say, they didn't effect sleeptime at all, she didn't even notice the change. I did like how they were more breathable than the disposable diapers. And when she woke up.....there was a poop. Now, I really didn't know what to do! I certainly did not have the sprayer that John and Sherry had recommended, and I didn't have diaper pails set up to contain the mess. I guess I just wasn't prepared. And when you're gonna cloth diaper, you have to prepare. So, I got a tub from a friend (thanks Leah!) and we're gonna try it again. Again, it's going to be a quick experiment as I only have 2 diapers, but, little by little I am going to start collecting.
But, I must say, if you've ever even thought of cloth diapering, go for it! It is sooooo easy (once you get your system set up, definitely check out the post from John and Sherry). I wish we could do them all the time and I had like 18 of them RIGHT NOW! But, we're going to use them when we can. Working on my instant gratification impulses...baby steps.
